MY Love Letter to the Irish Landscape - THE COASTGUARD LOOP WALK, EYERIES:

Ah, the Coastguard Loop in Eyeries—Sweet mother of baby jaysus, lord above, it’s one of those places that makes you wonder, how is this real, and why isn’t everyone here right now? But then you remember the beauty of Irish secrets—they’re not so much hidden as they are politely minding their own business albeit curtains twitching, waiting for you to stumble upon them.

Eyeries, lads.

It's hard to put a label on it

It’s like someone got their crayons out, and the result is these mad little houses screaming at you in every colour imaginable.

There’s a kind of wild kind of madness to it.

You start your walk there, thinking, ‘This is lovely!’

The sea, sky, and stone walls tumbling over themselves for attention, an assault on your senses.

The Route (and the Feelings It Inspires)

As you set off, you’re welcomed by the winding paths of rural Ireland, where every hedge seems to hold a secret. The trail loops about 5 kilometers, which is manageable unless you’re like Marian, who had to sit down for a think about life after a hill too steep to call friendly.

The highlights? Ah, the views of Coulagh Bay, where the ocean hurls itself onto the land like a drunken poet. And that old coastguard station, a ghost of Ireland’s history, quietly telling you, “Sure, we’ve seen it all—famine, ships, the whole lot—but aren’t we still standing?

Now, I'll tell you something, I did not hang-around that coastguard station long, the ghosts weren't as welcoming as I thought.

Ending Back in Eyeries

When the loop closes and you’re back among the painted houses, there’s something satisfying about knowing you’ve walked a path that’s both ancient and alive.

You’re ready for a cup of tea and maybe one of those biscuits they give you that look plain but taste like home
