Romantic Castle Elopement in Kilkenny, Ireland
Do you dream of eloping in Ireland by a Irish Castle?
Leslie and Brannigan did just that in September 2022. Leslie had initially booked me for a family vacation session in Kilkenny. However, after two postponements due to Covid, I wasn't in the least bit surprised when she emailed me to ask what I thought about being her Castle elopement photographer!
Brannigan's family heritage is from Kilkenny. In fact his grandmother lives just a stones throw from the castle. So it made complete sense to get married so close to his ancestral home.
Leslie's bridal prep took place at the stunning 5 star hotel Lyrath Estate House. The Lyrath Estate is a luxury 5 star 17th century manor & estate located 5 minutes drive from the heart of medieval Kilkenny.
Brannigan's groom prep took place at his grand-aunt's house, where surrounded by family and cousins he got ready for his Irish elopement. His aunt served as the officiant for the sunlit ceremony in his grand-aunt's garden. Such a family affair it was filled with lots of big emotions, from tears to laughter!
From there we made the short walk over to Kilkenny Castle. Kilkenny Castle can be used as a venue for elopements and weddings and they have the details about how to organise that here, you will need a photographer who is fully insured (which luckily for you, I am)
Kilkenny castle grounds are amazing in all seasons, especially late spring and late summer when the gardens are in full bloom, making it a brilliant destination to elope. The castle is the longest occupied castle in Ireland and was graciously gifted to a trust in the 60's for restoration. It is now owned by the people of Kilkenny.
From there we walked along the medieval mile towards Kyteler's Inn, a 13th century pub, once run by the infamous Alice De Kyteler, Ireland's first convicted witch! Kyteler's treated us to a private drink in their underground bar, said to be the oldest part of the pub. Traditional Irish music provided a romantic backdrop for our newly eloped lovers.
