Ireland's most romantic little church
M & S got married in one of Ireland's more romantic churches
S & M tied the knot in St Finbarr's Oratory, surrounded by mountains, midges, and most importantly fierce excitement.
I showed up ridiculously early, before the hairdresser in fact, as bridal prep was in near by Ballingeary (Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh)
. Majella made me feel right at home with tea and biscuits. Majella wore a beautiful hand sewn dress her mam and Sam’s sister made from lace brought all the way from India (try topping that at your local bridal shop). After vows, hugs, and a quick wrestle with the family dogs Teddy & Mando, it was straight across the road to the Gougane Barra Hotel, one of Cork’s best small wedding venues if you want the whole place buzzing but not bursting. All in all, it was a local wedding, with the bride and her family keeping close to their Ballingeary roots and sure what else could you ask for!
5 star Gougane Barra wedding reviews
"We hired Sarah Kate Photography for our wedding in July. She showed up at the house on my wedding day and it was as if she was an old friend. She was snapping away without I even noticing. I don't really like having my picture taken but she put me right at ease. My family commented on how great she was and I noticed how lovely she was with my nephews too.
I wanted candid and family pictures and she did exactly that. She sent some previews of pictures and honestly they were better than I could have imagined. I love them already.
She had a meeting with us before the day and she went through what we would like and threw out some ideas of her own which we had not thought of. This really helped on the day as it cut out a lot of our time wasting which meant that we had more time to enjoy with people.
I would recommend her 100% and I am completely happy with her service. Wishing her the best and I hope this helps you decide to go with her."

What’s it like getting married in Gougane Barra?
It’s like stepping into a John Hind postcard of Ireland, I grew up 20 minutes from Gougane and spent many a wet Sunday climbing the forest trails with my Dad, it's a place that has never once lost it's magic to me. And as much of a blaggard as I am, Gougane is always one place which brings me calm! Even on the chaos of a wedding day.
St. Finbarr’s Oratory is hands down one of the best churches in Ireland to get married in, I'm not being biased but...... it's perfectly small, sacred, and perched right in the middle of a lake, centre stage in its own love story.

The Gougane Barra Hotel is one of those places that feels like stepping back in time, and if you know me, I fricking love Oldie Worldie type places. Neil and Katy run it like you’re long-lost family coming home, all warmth, wit, and genuine Irish welcome.
Their family history in this valley goes back generations, it's very much a place where it's all too easy to relax, as the Tailor and Antsy said "Glac bóg an saol agus glacfaidh an saol bóg thú: Take the world fine and easy and the world will take you fine and easy"
It’s also one of the best small wedding venues in Cork, ideal if you want the whole place buzzing but not bursting. And I won’t even mention how good the food is… because once you’ve tasted it, you’ll never forgive yourself for not booking an extra night.
Gougane Barra By Jeremiah Joseph Callanan
‘There is a green island in lone Gougane Barra,
Where Allua of songs rushes forth as an arrow,
In deep-valley’d Desmond – a thousand wild fountains
Come down to that lake from their homes in the mountains.
There grows the wild ash, and a time stricken willow
Looks chidingly down on the mirth of the billow;
As, like some gay child, that sad monitor scorning,
It lightly laughs back to the laugh of the morning.
And its zone of dark hills – oh! to see them all bright’ning,
When the tempest flings out its red banner of lightning;
And the waters rush down, ‘mid the thunder’s deep rattle,
like clans from their hills at the voice of the battle.
And brightly the fire-crested billows are gleaming,
And wildly from Mullagh the eagles are screaming,
Oh! where is the dwelling in valley, or highland,
So sweet for a bard as this lone little island.’
