A Grand Day Out: Denise & Pauric’s Wildly Chill Killarney Elopement
By Sarah Kate Photography, Elopement Photographer in Killarney, Ireland
Sure, you know yourself, not everyone’s cut out for the big Irish wedding. The hotel banquets, the 200 cousins you’ve never met, the fella from down the road who “knew your mother in the eighties”, eh, no thanks.
Denise and Pauric had the right idea.
Skip all the drama, keep it real, and leg it to Killarney for a wee elopement that was great craic.
They met through work back in 2019, two messers, the kind who’d rather be out in the fresh air than stuck in a boardroom. And when it came time to make it official, they didn’t want fireworks or fanfare, just something quiet and true.
So where did they end up?
Back at the very place he proposed, the castle ruins behind The Lake Hotel Killarney, looking out over the still, glassy water of the Killarney Lakes. If that’s not romantic, I don’t know what is.
Elopement Vows by the Castle Ruins
At three o’clock, they made their way down the path to the 12th-century medieval castle ruins behind the hotel. It’s one of those spots that takes your breath away, ancient stone, ivy creeping up the walls, and the lake shimmering away in the background like it’s showing off.
Damien Moloney, their solemniser, led the ceremony, with Liam and Shannon as witnesses and the rest of Killarney acting as the audience, a few swans, a heron, a weasel, and the odd tourist gawking from the hotel balcony.
It was short, sweet, and full of heart and laughter, just the way any wedding should be!
Say yes to heaven

A Stroll by the Lakes
Afterwards, we wandered down by the water for a few elopement photos around Killarney Lakes. They’d both said they were camera-shy, but you wouldn’t have known it. The trick, I told them, is not to pose, just to be. And they were brilliant at that.
Laughing, slagging, holding hands, and trying not to fall into the lake, the usual romance of an Irish afternoon.
Every corner of Killarney National Park looked amazing in its autumn colours, with mist over the mountains, the water calm as a mirror, and those old trees arching overhead like they were blessing the day. It was all ridiculously gorgeous, and we were fortunate with the weather.
Why Killarney Is Perfect for an Elopement
If you’re thinking about eloping in Ireland, do yourself a favour and put Killarney at the top of your list. Between the Lake Hotel, Ross Castle, and the trails through the park, it’s got that wild mix of luxury and wilderness that makes you feel like you’re part of an old Irish love story, just with better hair and lighting.
And for couples like Denise and Pauric, who wanted something intimate, honest, and full of laughter, it was absolute perfection.
In the End…
No pomp, no show, just love, laughter, and a castle ruin by the lake. It’s the kind of day that reminds you why Ireland is one of the best places in the world to get married.
So if you’re sitting there dreaming about your own elopement in Killarney, maybe take a leaf out of Denise and Pauric’s book. Keep it small, keep it wild, and for the love of Jaysus, keep it real.
